Attractions in Amsterdam

Orientation

Amsterdam is located in the northern half of the Netherlands and boasts 700,000 people. Those people are busy with pigs and flowers as 75% of the world’s tulips come from the Netherlands, as does 70% of the world’s bacon. A quarter of the country is below sea level and Amsterdam is built entirely on piles (bring a life jacket.) In fact, 6000 of the huge sticks hold up the Central Train Station alone. The city is compact; nearly everything is within walking distance. The heart of the city is Dam Square, with the massive Central Train Station. Residents own more than one million bikes, so keep out of the bike lane, and listen for the bells. Amsterdam Schipol Airport is about 20 kilometres southwest of the city.

Sightseeing

Amsterdam has more museums per square metre than any other European capital so there’s always something to stare at. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are two of the best, or get up close and personal with some beer at the Heineken Experience. A canal cruise is an excellent way to see the city, sitting down. And don’t forget to rent a bike. Join the locals and pedal around the 400 kilometres of bike paths in the city. Don’t combine the two activities however.

Nightlife

Amsterdam has something to cater to every taste, and with so many options close by, it’s easy to find what you’re in the mood for. The Red Light District is of course a must-see. Hordes of tourist descend on the neighbourhood every night to watch the working girls patiently waiting in their windows. For a little more action, Leidseplein is a hot area with lots of bars, clubs and casinos. For a bit more mellow evening, check out the bars and restaurants around Rembrandtplein. Warm weather sees everyone move outdoors and cafes and terraces fill up with people out enjoying the sun.
