Money tips

The best and safest method of obtaining money in Amsterdam is via ATM’s. There are plenty of them and you’ll get instant exchange rates. Most banks and exchange offices will exchange cash for you, as well as cash traveller’s cheques; but usually come with a hefty fee. If you must exchange money, the best place is at the main train station, at GWK Bank.

They are open 24 hours a day. Credit cards are widely accepted, but be sure to ask first if wanting to pay by card in a restaurant.

When you get the bill, tell the waiter how much you want to pay - don´t leave the tip on the table. Normal tipping is 5-10%, but feel free to tip more if the service has been especially good.

Beer in pub: 2-5 EUR
Pack of cigarettes: 4 EUR
Shot: 3-4 EUR
Meal in a restaurant: 15-35 EUR
Fast food meal: 6-8 EUR
Taxi: 7.5-15 EUR
