Attractions in Gdansk

Orientation

Gdańsk (normally spelled Gdansk) is Poland's principal seaport and lies on the southern edge of the Gdansk Bay (by the Baltic Sea). It's the northernmost part of Poland. It's one of the most popular tourist destinations in Poland - sharing Krakow's laid back approach and a multitude of pubs with Warsaw's cosmopolitan character and world class nightlife. What is more, it has a beautiful sandy beach which makes it a perfect destination for your last night of freedom.

The city is the capital of the Pomeranian Province. Gdansk has close to half a million citizens (60% women!), making it the largest city in Northern Poland.

Sightseeing

If you ever find yourself off the famous 4 km long Gdansk sandy beach full of tanned polish chicks and ice-cold beer, you better go see the city as it's quite something. Gdansk is probably the best known port city of Poland, so you might want to check out the docks. The city was partially destroyed by the Soviet Army, but was later rebuilt, with the harbour as the center of the development, and the old town conveniently located around it. You'll also want to visit the Royal Road, where you will encounter sights such as The Torture House, The Prison Tower, The Golden Gate, Long Street and Long Market and countless beer gardens, pubs and sailor theme bars. If you are lucky, you might see some fantastic open air concerts - Queen, for instance, staged a concert in the Shipyard in October 2008. The most famous though is a 4-day long Open'er Festival (or Polish Woodstock) starting beginning of July and serving 40,000 young people each year.

Nightlife

Experience the Gdansk nightlife and you'll feel unusually bright - maybe not in the head, but definitely in the sky, as the sun sets very late and rises very early here. The bars and clubs aren't as close together as in other cities, but if you don't mind walking around a bit, you'll find the places worth your time - especially the unbeatable sailor bars with great music, drunk women and an atmosphere which you'll find nowhere else. Gdansk has a great variety of different places, whether you're in the mood for sipping pints or dancing your a** off. As an important European port city, Gdansk is also visited by tons of beautiful foreign girls, who simply can't wait to get off their ships and party the night away with you, just to miss breakfast and show off their perfectly tanned bottoms at the beach later. Good advice - take lots of sun lotion to spread on these wild eastern European bodies.
