OrientationRiga is the capital and largest city in Latvia. It’s probably one of the more cosmopolitan cities in the Baltic region; since its founding back in 1201 it’s been part of the Polish-Lithuanian kingdom; part of Sweden; part of Russia and part of the USSR. This has led to a diverse population in which only 45% of the city’s residents are actually Latvian. The rest originally hail mainly from Russia; with some Lithuanians, Poles, Ukrainians and Belarusians thrown in. Riga’s Old Town stretches along the Daugava River and is a UNESCO Heritage Site.

SightseeingMost of the city’s sites are situated in the Old Town. Doms Cathedral and St. Peter’s church are two of the most dominate landmarks. The Riga Radio and TV Tower is the tallest building in the region. The Town Hall Square (Ratslaukums) is a good place to start your exploration. You can still see some remaining portions of the city’s old, original wall as well as the Swedish Gate. Don’t forget to explore the Central District – you’ll find it a nice change of pace from the cobblestone medieval-ness of the Old Town. NightlifeYea, it’s here. While the city does have a reputation of being unsafe towards partying foreigners; booking with Pissup.com will ensure you get essential advice on how to have the time of your life. From ragged Communist pubs to modern bars filled with fun people to the clubs you never dreamed could exist; if you can’t find something to blow your mind in Riga – check your pulse. |
