Money tips
The best way of getting your Lats in Riga is via an ATM. They are everywhere in the city centre. Not only will you get the best exchange rate; you won’t have to carry large amounts of money with you. Check with your bank before you leave to see what foreign withdrawal fees they may slap on you – and let them know you plan on using your card abroad. You can exchange cash at exchange centres in the airport and most banks. It should go without saying, but never exchange money on the street.
We don’t recommend bringing traveller’s cheques as no one will accept them and banks will charge about 4% to cash them. Credit cards are becoming more popular; but usually only in touristy places and other sites around the centre.
Tipping isn’t obligatory, but it is common to leave 5-10% in restaurants. This isn’t given directly to the server; but placed on a small plate at the counter. Tip your taxi driver about the same amount.
