Spain adopted the euro in 1999 and has been the country's currency ever since. You'll be able to use your debit or credit card in most establishments in Barcelona, although you may find that a few places have a cash-only policy, so be sure to withdraw some euros upon arrival.

Language

In Barcelona, the general population speaks two official languages: Catalan and Spanish. On top of that, many people working within the tourism industry can also speak English, including all the guides Pissup works with.

• Avoid standing out as a target from criminals, don't walk around with your phone out, and keep the paper tourist maps for when you're sitting down.

• If someone approaches you randomly, they might be trying to distract you from something terrible happening, so don't give random people any attention.

• Keep your passport locked up in your accommodation. You are required as a tourist to have a form of ID on you at all times, but a copy is accepted, too.

• Never walk home drunk alone; order a cab instead or wait until someone else from your group is heading back.

Public Transports

The best way to get around Barcelona is by using the city's extensive public transport system, which consists of trains, metro, trams, and buses.

• Barcelona's metro has eight lines labelled with colours and numbers (for example, L3 (green)). They run between 5 am and 12 am on Monday to Thursday, Sundays, and all public holidays. On Fridays, it runs between 5 am and 2 am, and on Saturdays, it runs through the night.

• Two tram networks in Barcelona cover specific city areas. It operates on the exact timetable as the metro during midweek and Sundays, and then on Fridays, the schedule is 5 am to 2 am.

• If you want to ride the bus in Barcelona, more than 100 routes cover the city between 5 am and 11 pm, with fewer night buses running during the late night hours.

Public transports tickets and fares

• Bus: Aerobus Lines are the best option to reach the city centre (Plaza Catalunya) from the airport y. From Terminal 1, you must take Line A1; from Terminal 2, you must take Line A2. Tickets are priced around £6, and the journey takes around 35 minutes.

• Train: If your flight lands at Terminal 2, another option is to take a regional train to reach the city centre (Rodalies R2 train). You'll be dropped at Barcelona-Sants in the centre, and the ticket will cost €4.90 (£4.06) for the roughly 30-minute journey.

• Metro: The Orange L9 Sud Line (L9S) can take you to the city from the airport. You'll need to get off at Zona Universitaria (near the Camp Nou Stadium), and the ticket will cost around £5. The journey takes around 30 minutes.
