Tallinn City Guide for Stag Weekends

The Estonian capital is located in the north-eastern part of the Baltic Sea region and has a population of just over 400,000 people. Situated just 80km south of Helsinki, this area of the world is extremely green and almost 50% of Estonia is covered by forest. Thankfully though it does not possess Scandinavian prices! Although one of the most expensive cities in the Baltic states, prices are still low enough to enjoy copious amounts of booze, babes and bullets, with the average price of a pint in the Estonian capital setting you back a mere £2!

Tallinn is a blend of old and new. SinceEstonia broke away from the Soviet Union, it has placed a great emphasis on cutting edge technology and is the birthplace of Skype. However, it is famed for its Old Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasting winding cobblestone streets and some breathtaking Gothic architecture. The city is very compact, making it easily accessible by foot and thus perfect for a stag do or weekend away with the boys. Before you embark on a night of debauchery or you have a horrible hangover and feel that some impressive architecture will help you take your mind off of it, then take a stroll around the city and look out for these following landmarks.

The Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms give great panoramic views of the city’s red-tiled roofs, towers and walls. The Town Hall, built in 1404 and the Town Hall Square have been the city’s heart for over eight centuries. Atop Toompea Hill sits Toompea Castle, protecting Estonia’s impressively pink Parliament. Closely located to this is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the city’s Russian orthodox cathedral, completed in 1900. The Kiek in de Kök is a six storey cannon tower built in the late 1400s. It played an important part in the Livonian war and still has cannonballs embedded into its walls to evidence that! Unfortunately its name does not derive from what the city’s gorgeous females did to the medieval soldiers for excessively pestering them! It comes from the fact they could see into the kitchens of the houses below! Situated just a few moments stroll outside of the old town is the Kadriorg Palace, surrounded by impressive gardens and fountains, the perfect place to shrug off a hangover!

How to get to Tallinn

Direct flights to Tallinn from London Gatwick take 2 hours 45 minutes and start from as little as £61 return from Stansted with Ryanair. Easyjet also fly direct from Gatwick at budget prices. Whilst other airlines do fly this route, they usually incorporate a stop and subsequently the price and duration of the flights increase.
