Vilnius is located in southeast Lithuania and is the second biggest city of the Baltic states behind Riga. It is the Lithuanian capital city and home to a population of approximately 526,000 residents with a further 928,000 guests visiting each year. Situated over 300km inland, rain is very rare in Vilnius, especially in the Summer. Vilnius has the largest Old Town in Europe and similarly to Rigaand Tallinnthis historical district is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage list. Its beautiful architecture characterised by a Jewish influence led Napoleon to dub it ‘the Jerusalem of the North’.

Reminders of the Jewish community’s suffering throughout the years are evident in various parts of the city. The KGB’s old torture cells and a ghetto in the city centre where the Jewish population lived before the WW2, the Nazi invasion, and the Holocaust destroyed this ancient community, are two such horrorific landmarks.

Thankfully Vilnius is creating a new identity for itself. Delicious cuisine and flourishing nightlife, found amongst some impressive skyscrapers have provided the city with a needed facelift. Vilnius is cheap and compact thus making it the perfect location for a stag party or break away with your pals.

Wizz Air lives up to its name and transports you to the other side of Europe in a sharp 2 hours and 55 minutes. Seats start from as little as £70 return from London Luton. Ryanair also makes the flight from London Stansted for a similar price.

The city houses several charming microbreweries such as Alynas and Bambalynė that offer nearly 100 different beers each. Another establishment that offers a wide variety of different beers is 7 Fridays, which is housed in an old monastery and offers a wide selection of different beers. Gringo is another venue that offers a wide range of  beers although is specialises in rum and offers several screens if you are after some sport.

 One of the most popular places in town is the seriously chic Sky Bar situated on the 22nd floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel. Whilst other bars such as Sweet and Sour may compete with it for the city’s best cocktails award, there is no denying that this place provides unparalleled views of Vilnius. For the vino lovers among you, Vilnius houses a large number of bohemian wine cellars where you can pick up a nice bottle of red for roughly £4.

Although the city does not have the most extensive selection of nightclubs, entrance fees are low and the city is small, therefore if you don’t like one then you can easily move on to the next*. Exit Vilnius* is an impressive venue offering some top lighting and special effects, whilst top international DJs provide the tunes. Meanwhile Opium boasts the best sound system in the city and emits a miniature superclub feel. If you are after something a little more commercial then Salento DiscoPub is a popular venue that focuses on pop music.
