Let’s be honest, most of your pals on your stag are only going to care about one thing, and that’s the nightlife. Porto has its fair share of districts that get lively after dark, loaded with electric clubs and famous bars where you can get up to no good. These are the best ones every stag group should visit!
One of Porto’s busiest districts, there's always some action around the colourful Ribeira neighbourhood that sits on the banks of the Douro. Wine bars such as Bacchus Vini sit alongside laid-back cocktail lounges like Nomadik. On certain nights, DJs set up beneath the bridge, drawing crowds onto the streets.
If there’s one nightlife area everyone knows about in Porto, it’s Galerias de Paris. This charming strip is brimming with places to eat and drink, and really comes alive in the evening. From live music at Alma to karaoke at Stage79, Galerias de Paris is always a reliable choice for stag parties.
Cedofeita has a hip, creative feel and is widely known as Porto’s artsy district, thanks to its wealth of galleries. It also boasts a great selection of cosy bars, including craft beer boozers like Catraio Craft Beer Shop & Bar, as well as small street stands such as La Carreta Bar, which serves mixed drinks.
For a more relaxed start to the day or a slower-paced evening, head to Foz do Douro. This affluent seaside area is home to welcoming pubs like Pub Bonaparte Foz, where you can watch the footie, and Eleven Sports Bar Foz, which is celebrated for its selection of distinctive IPA brews.
Porto’s long-running rock club, Tendinha dos Clérigos, is a place for the city’s rock fans to come let loose. Expect a mix of 90s hits and indie classics, with a dancefloor that stays busy late into the night.
Right in the heart of Galerias de Paris, Lust is the go-to club for a big night out. Offering smoke machines and disco balls, the club regularly hosts themed nights, from electro parties to throwback anthems.
Housed in a former cinema, Boîte has become a recognised name in Porto’s club scene over the years. Step inside to a dark room with flashing lights, dance, hip-hop and pop tracks that keep the crowd moving. It can get quite busy here on weekends. For this reason, make sure to arrive early to avoid the queues.
Spanning two floors, Plano B is a Porto nightlife institution. Open late and catering to a wide range of tastes, they play everything from house and techno to crowd-pleasing classics. Live gigs and performances are sometimes held here too, so keep an eye out for updates.
If outdoor drinks are on the agenda for one of the days on your stag, Base Porto is a great choice. Located in Baixa, this garden bar is full of character and has a chill ambience when the sun is out. It’s ideal for some laid-back daytime drinking with your pals in the open-air seating area.
Curioso lives up to its name with an inventive cocktail menu designed to spark curiosity. Expect creative combinations and bold flavours, with signature drinks that push beyond the usual classics. Due to its popularity, it’s a good idea to make a reservation here to be on the safe side.
Adega Leonor is a no-frills bar with drinks as cheap as chips, generous happy hours, and crowds spilling onto the street. Particularly popular among university students drawn in by their amazing sangria, a group of rowdy lads like yourselves will fit right in just as well at Adega Leonor.
Hidden behind an unassuming entrance, Apotecário adds a sense of excitement to cocktail drinking at their venue steps from Mercado Ferreira Borges. Here, tastings are served blind. You choose a flavour note that interests you and then let the bartenders surprise you with one of their carefully crafted creations.
Wine lovers shouldn’t miss Wine Quay Bar. Set along the Douro River, this place pairs a strong wine list with tasty tapas and front-row river views. At this gorgeous spot, seating opens right onto the quay, so customers can watch boats drift past as the sun sets, with a glass of flavourful vino in hand.
Looking to pick up some souvenirs from your trip to show the ladies back home that you’ve done things other than drink? Pay a visit to Mercado do Bolhão, a two-storey marketplace dating back to the 19th century. Here, you’ll find everything from delicious foods to quirky gifts.
You might be thinking, why would I visit a train station on my stag do? But São Bento Railway Station isn't just any old transport terminal. This marvellous site gets a lot of attention for its fabulous layout and decorative blue-and-white azulejo tile mosaic art. While these details are enough to blow anyone away, they're even more interesting because they show important scenes from Portugal’s history.
Porto has its fair share of gastronomic delights, but none as iconic as the francesinha. More than just a typical sandwich, the francesinha is a staple at many restaurants in the city, including Café Santiago, which is known for its delicious serving. It consists of steak, ham, and Portuguese sausage, covered in a special sauce, stuffed into bread slices, with a layer of cheese on top and a fried egg to finish.
There are plenty of viewpoints in Porto, but Torre Dos Clérigos is the best of the best. To reach the top of this Baroque bell tower, you must take on the spiralling staircase, which may be a struggle after a heavy night out. But don’t worry, when you get up there, you’ll be treated to a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the city.
The Porto Cathedral is a key historic landmark, dating back to the 12th century. Situated in the Batalha neighbourhood, this site is an emblem of Porto's history, where visitors can enter and marvel at the mix of Romanesque, Baroque, and Gothic styles.
Linking Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, the Dom Luís I Bridge stretches across the Douro River and ranks among the city’s most iconic sights. Named after King Luís I of Portugal, crossing it is almost like a rite of passage, rewarding walkers with sweeping views of Porto from a whole different angle.
River cruises on the Douro are a popular way to experience Porto from the water. From traditional rabelo trips to party boat rides, you can glide beneath the city’s famous bridges and take in its main sights along the riverbanks.
Porto, like the rest of Portugal, uses the Euro as its currency, which the country adopted back in 1999. It’s a good idea to withdraw some physical currency as well as keep your bank card for paying for things. Many bars and restaurants accept cards, but some may prefer cash. This way, you’ll be covered no matter what situation you find yourselves in.
It’s normal to get a bit excited on a stag do and take the run of yourselves, but remember, staying safe should be a priority. Here are some things to watch out for.
Don’t leave your drinks unattended when in bars and strip clubs. Drink spiking can happen with stag and hen parties often being the targets.
Rather than strolling home from downtown Porto in the dark late at night, consider getting a taxi or taking an Uber or Bolt. Fares on the main ridesharing apps are often cheap, and they eliminate the risk of being targeted by opportunists when drunk.
Pickpockets do operate around different parts of the city, especially on the metro and trams. When using these forms of public transport, keep an eye on your belongings and don’t flash any cash or high-value items.
Keep an eye on the news for any strike announcements. Strikes do happen occasionally across Portugal, which can disrupt your travel plans. Sometimes they occur in airports, other times it’s the metro.
Parts of Porto, like the area around São Bento railway station, are relatively safe during the day, but at night, they can be quite sketchy, so be careful walking around after dark.
Porto’s highly advanced public transport system will help your stag party travel to all corners of the city with ease.
STCP is the name of the bus company that operates in the city, but they’re also locally known as ‘autocarros.’ For cheaper fares, be sure to purchase an Andante Card, which offers discounted fares on select routes.
Porto’s metro connects 70 stations across six lines. It runs from 6 AM to 1 AM, with fares varying depending on the zone.
Another great way to get around Porto is by taking the tram. In total, three routes are available with trams 1, 18, and 22 serving them.
Taxis are safe to use in Porto, but they can sometimes be difficult to hail on the side of the road, as many of them operate from the ranks, which are called ‘Praça de Táxis.’ Rather than wasting time looking for one of these, it’s easier to use ridesharing apps such as Uber or Bolt, as a driver will pick you up directly from your location.
Most people plan their Porto stag parties during the summer, from June to August. This period offers the best weather, with sunny skies, but because it’s busier, activity and accommodation availability can be limited due to increased competition. If you can’t come in the summer, the shoulder months like May and September are nice alternatives.
Given Porto’s location right on the Atlantic Ocean, the weather can change at short notice, even in summer. This is why having a backup plan is essential. Activities like escape games are completely indoor and are fun for testing your mental strength. If the rain is down for longer than a few hours (a strong possibility in Porto), a pissup in a brewery with unlimited beer or an evening pub crawl is the perfect solution.
Porto is a very safe city for a stag do, but you’ll need to watch out for pickpockets who operate in crowded areas. Another thing to be careful of is drink spiking, which is common, but as long as you stick together in a group, you shouldn't have problems.
The best neighbourhoods for going out and experiencing Porto’s nightlife on a stag do are Galerias de Paris in the historic centre, Ribeira, Cedofeita and Foz do Douro.
When visiting Porto as a stag group, there are a number of amazing areas where you can stay to get the most out of your trip. These include Ribeira, where many first-time visitors stay; Vitória, near all the best nightlife; and Sé, which is convenient for those who want to be central.
Most of Porto is considered safe, but if you find yourself in Aleixo, Cerco do Porto, or São João de Deus, you'll want to have your wits about you, as these areas are considered rougher than others.
When travelling to Porto city centre from the airport, you can take the metro line E (labelled purple), buses 601, 602, or 604, or a cab or a ridesharing app like Uber or Bolt.
We recommend booking your stag party activities once the dates are confirmed. While Pissup Tours always accepts last-minute bookings, the closer it gets to the dates, the more likely it is that the activities you may want to book will sell out.
By European standards, Porto is considered a cheap city to visit. Stag parties can have an enjoyable night eating and drinking for around £40 to £50, after paying for activities. You could easily spend more or less than this amount of money depending on how you like to party.
